Here are some great gifts for blind and partially sighted kids…and sighted kids too.
The Bop It gives verbal commands that tell you to bop it, twist it, pull it and shake it. It’s a great interactive toy. Once the child knows where the different parts of the game are they should be able to play by listening Bop It’s verbal cues. Cool huh! We found this one at Argos.
We’ve created tactile pictures of some of the characters from the Harry Potter films and we got a great response from the VI child who road-tested them for us. So much so, that his mum is buying him the audio books (read by Stephen Fry) for Christmas. The Harry Potter ebooks and digital audio books are available to buy from Pottermore Shop and Waterstones.
Dens, tents and wigwams are great for indoor activity in the colder months – just pitch up in the bedroom. Then, when it comes to spring and summer, take outdoors for garden fun in the sun. Little dens, homes and hideaways have lots of play appeal and tactile qualities – so think about theme and fabrics. We found some great options to pitch or pop-up from Not on the high street.
Kids musical instruments are brilliant for creative sound play – even if you are jsut making a noise. We love these from Amazon (and if you clickon the picture link and buy the product, a donation goes to Living Paintings).
Accordion – best for hipster toe tapping fun
Playroom classic – a brightly coloured Xylophone
14 piece musical instrument set – a whole lotta shaking going on
More sound-fun can be had with the Scratch Box. You can record voices, songs and noises and turn them into them into your own musical hit! Just use the turntable to ‘scratch up’ the recording with forward, reverse and repeat scratch motions.
Jewellery is great for its tactile qualities, all round prettiness and festive spakle. We love the tiaras at Monsoon.
Also, cool kids brand Alex and Alexa have some funky kids jewellery like this delicious cupcake necklace.
