An accessible guide to contemporary art
July 13, 2016

CREATE Contemporary Art is our short guide to a few famous artists living and working in Great Britain today. All the artists work in different media such as installations, painting, pottery, music and textiles. And all express aspects of life in their work including personal tragedy, political and social awareness, exploration of gender, humour and wit.

Listen to a taster of the book with Corie Brown, Channel 4 broadcaster, who is visually impaired and loves visiting galleries:

Tracey Emin

My Bed is a confessional work of art, whereby the artist’s own intimate experiences and emotions are expressed in their art. Its rumpled clutter and dirty sheets are a testimonial to the emotional heartache of a relationship breakdown.

We’ve included an audio only track that explores Acid Brass, created in 1997, a work of art that explores the social, political and musical connections between house music and traditional brass bands.

Listen to Maxine Peake, actor, guide us through some of the historical and musical aspects of Acid Brass:

Peter Blake

Iconic Pop Artist and creator of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper album cover, is still busy making pop-inspired works of art , such as the large-scale collage at the Royal Albert Hall featuring an eclectic array of performers including Bowie and The Spice Girls. We feature a tactile image of Blake’s ‘Self Portrait with Badges’ with the audio read by art fan and  supermodel Lily Cole.
