Liam’s story: a place at his dream university

Liam joined our library aged 9. Our books have enabled him to learn to read, encouraged him to broaden his horizons, write and publish poetry and achieve A and A* grades in his GCSEs and A levels.

Liam has been studying languages at Nottingham University and has secured a place at Marburg University in Germany where he will be studying for a year – we couldn’t be more proud!

He also won a BBC game show called Two Tribes in 2015 with some questions referring back to our books – which also made us smile. Liam won a trip to China and then got the taste for travelling and did a tour around Europe.

Here’s Liam, in his own words…
“I began receiving Living Paintings tactile picture books when I first lost my sight, around the age of nine. I filled in the feedback comments and, shortly after becoming a member of the free library service, was asked to edit some Touch to See books for them. I really enjoyed this as it gave me the feeling of being included as, at a time when lots of children around my age were doing paper rounds, I also had a job. I also felt that my opinions were listened to by the Living Paintings’ team”.

I was then asked to speak at the twentieth anniversary and subsequently at several fundraising and awareness events. This really helped me to build up my confidence in speaking in front of others and allowed people to get an understanding of the charity from the point of view of someone who fully benefited from its work.

The experiences and opportunities I was given by Living Paintings were instrumental in winning me the Young Citizen Of Worcester Award and the Disabled Role Model prize at the National Diversity Awards, both in 2012. I will be forever grateful to Living Paintings for the role they have played in developing me into who I am today”.
