Maxine Peake is an acclaimed stage actor, well-known for portraying strong women in serious dramatic productions. In 2014 she performed in a radical re-working of Hamlet for the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester, in which she played the lead role and many of the other male characters were also played by women. The production was phenomenally successful and the run was extended due to unprecedented demand for tickets.
