The Library ServiceOur postal library service is completely free to Library Members. For information about who can become a Library Member and how to join the Library please see the appropriate sections below. How it Works
All the touch and sound packs from our Catalogue are sent out from our Library via the post using "Articles for the Blind". We always include a return address label so that the packs can be returned to us at no cost and the postage packaging is re-usable. Loans can be made to anywhere in the UK and Eire. It is possible to make special arrangements for loans to go overseas but remember all our packs are produced in the English language. Our packs are on loan for a standard three month period. This period may be easily extended by phone or library members may wish to exchange packs more regularly than this. More than one pack can be borrowed at a time. A Library Member can receive as many loans as they wish during a year. For Adult Library Members, once they have received their first loan, our Library will automatically send out the next Album by numerical order on return of the last. This automatic system is designed to make it as easy as possible for visually impaired adults to have independent access to our touch and sound packs. However, we are always happy to make loans on request from our Catalogue. For Children and Youngsters all loans are made in response to requests from our Catalogue. Our purpose is to make sure that as many people as possible benefit from our Library Service. We are always happy to fulfil special requests where we can. Loans will be made for as long or short a time as is wished for. Who can Join?Children, Young People, Adults, Groups, Teachers, Schools, Blind Societies etc.Our free library service is available nationally to all visually impaired adults, youngsters, and children - there is NO requirement fulfil other than that our touch and sound packs will benefit those who receive them. In addition parents, teachers, rehabilitation officers, Blind Societies, Organisations working with visually impaired people etc can also borrow from our Library Service. In fact if you or your organisation are involved in any way with individuals who have visual impairment we are happy to discuss your requirements and offer you the loan of any of our material. And remember it's a completely free service! How to JoinChildren, Young People and Adults (for groups please go to Working with Groups Section)It couldn't be easier! All we need to know is a name and address, with post code and in the case of youngsters and children we also need to know their ages and which braille grade they use. We will then send the new library member their first pack as soon as possible. In the case of adults, we will send our Introductory Album which will introduce our work, provide examples and explain how our touch and sound system works. For children and youngsters we also provide Introductory Packs but they may also borrow additional/different packs in the first instance.Working with Groups of Blind and Partially Sighted AdultsDo you know of a group or organisation who would benefit from our service or are you interested in setting up a group? Not only are we happy to offer our free library service to visually impaired people in their own home, but we also have a lot of organisations who use our albums to work with a group of visually impaired individuals. We are happy to provide everything to help a group run easily. We can send typed scripts of the audio commentaries if these are more suitable than using a tape, although the tapes provide a variety of voices to listen to. Any number of raised images (thermoforms) can be sent, and the group leader will have the Master Album to work from in advance. We can provide as much material as you require for as many people within your group in the hope that everyone gets a great deal of pleasure from exploring the world of art and sharing in the experience. Every group has its own particular needs, so do ask us if your group has any special interests. We have a set of guidelines for the setting up of a group which was written by Pat Peet, one of our group leaders who has successfully run a number of groups for many years. They are only suggestions and everyone will adapt these to their particular needs, we are happy to share them with you if you would like us to send you a copy. We are here to help in any way we can, please do contact us if you know of a group or organisation who could benefit from our service. Ordering Loans On-LineWould you like to order the loan of a touch and sound pack on line? You can only do this if you are already registered as a library member.
