LIVING PICTURE BOOKS - bringing picture books to life for visually impaired
children
Designed
to provide visually impaired children with access to the wonderful illustrations
in story books. A Living Picture Book pack contains a normal, popular,
illustrated children's book, with the main characters translated into
raised images which are brightly coloured for the benefit of children
with partial sight. These raised images are bound into the book together
with clear plastic sheets containing the Braille text, which allows the
book to be shared with sighted parents or friends, as the original words
and pictures are still visible. An audio cassette tape explains how to
touch and understand the raised images, and also describes all of the
other pictures in the book. Living Picture Books are available in both
Braille Grades. Currently, 84 titles are available and more are in production.
ALSO included in this range we have books which are designed for visually
impaired children aged 7 - 11 which tie in with Key Stage 2 of the National
Curriculum. They provide fun and interesting information about an artist,
and then touch and sound explanations of some of the chosen artist’s
works of art. An example is the book “Camille and the Sunflowers”,
an illustrated story book about Van Gogh by Laurence Anholt. This contains:
- A Living Picture Book (as previously described)
- Raised images to feel of 3 of Van Gogh’s paintings. These are
accompanied by taped commentaries that explain how to touch and understand
the raised images whilst describing what the paintings look like.
