Assistive Apps: Prizmo by Corie Brown

Prizmo App Icon

Hi, I’m Corie – one of the Trustees here at Living Paintings.

Something I’m really passionate about is technology – particularly when it just makes life easier!  Mobile devices with screen readers and magnification have opened up a whole new world for people with little or no eyesight.  It’s really exciting, but do we all know what’s out there?

In the first instalment on our new Assistive App blog I’d like to introduce Prizmo. It’s a scanning app, but it’s the OCR capability that I find exceptionally useful.

Prizmo works with the camera & Camera Roll on my iPhone – essentially, take a photo of something with text on it and within a couple of seconds it’s reading the text out loud!

Obviously accuracy depends on lighting, contrast etc – it struggles with cooking instructions on curved jars for example – but with a clear image, it performs very well.  I use it for reading letters, reports, menus…even information boards in museums and galleries.

If you want to know more about Prizmo click here to the developers website.

So that’s Prizmo.

Hope you find this information helpful. We’d love to hear from you!  Let us know if you’ve tried this App or if there are Apps you think we should feature on the Living Paintings Assistive Apps blog. And please share this blog with family and friends…
