A while ago I put out a message to find a Leader for the new Book Club being set up in Devizes, Wiltshire. Well, a lovely lady called Julia came forward and has volunteered to run the Club. Although she wasn’t too keen to have her photo taken I did manage to take one and here she is!
The first meeting is after Easter. The publicity has gone out and people are already registering. We will be talking about the story of Living Paintings and discussing ‘A Great Catch’ which has two tactile images.
The two paintings are about first catching, then selling, fish over a hundred years ago. You may know them. One is called “The Fisherman” painted by Henry Scott Tuke in 1888. The second is “Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach” by Stanhope. A. Forbes in 1884/5. I know this book will bring back fond memories and spur people on to talk about Cornish life.
Julia and I met yesterday in the Calne Library close to the town of Devizes and we agreed that perhaps we wouldn’t manage to talk about both paintings as there will undoubtedly be a lot of talking and getting to know each other. The most important thing about a first meeting is to find out what everyone wants from the group, so giving people time to chat and share is crucial.
Julia and I can’t wait to meet everyone. She said “It’s good to be involved in a creative initiative and I look forward to meeting group members who I’m sure will contribute different ideas and influence how the group develops”.
We will let you know how the first meeting on Thursday 16th April goes. If you or someone you know, is interested, lives in Wiltshire and would like to come along to the first meeting, this Club will be meeting every Thursday of each month from 10.30 am to 12.30pm at St Lucy’s Sight Centre, Browfort, Bath Road, Devizes SN10 2AT. If you are in the area, come in and say hello!
