We’re delighted to announce that our new Touch to See book on theatre, Spotlight on the Stage, is now available to borrow from the library. The book is ideal for young blind and partially sighted people interested in all aspects of the theatre – from its beginnings in Ancient Greece, via The Globe and the great bard, to spectacular West End musicals such as Wicked.

The book includes beautifully detailed tactile pictures of Albert and Joey from War Horse, David Tennant as Hamlet and Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller in Danny Boyle’s acclaimed version of Frankenstein. To add to the authenticity, the audio descriptions are read by a stellar line-up of great British theatre actors including Derek Jacobi, Simon Callow, Michael Sheen, Frances de la Tour, Luke Newberry and Maxine Peake.

Listen to the “to be or not to be” soliloquy read by Maxine Peake from Spotlight on the Stage:

Albert and Joey go for a run, Warhorse

As well as telling readers about the history of theatre and outstanding plays, there are hints and tips for aspiring thespians including actors’ workshops which show how staging, sets, costumes and props can enhance a performance. There are also tracks with practical advice on how to embark on a career in the theatre.

The book was researched and written by Beth Flintoff. Beth is a freelance playwright and director who works for acclaimed theatres such as The Watermill near Newbury.

Don’t forget to also visit the Spotlight on the Stage Discovery Hub which supports this Touch to See book. It contains ideas for theatrical things to do, places to visit, interviews with actors, news on plays and theatre companies and much more.
