Coming soon to the Living Paintings library is The Wonderful World of David Walliams. This book brings together a selection of seven of the author’s bestselling children’s stories with tactile pictures of some of their main characters, as illustrated by Tony Ross and Sir Quentin Blake. From Mr Stink to the adventures of The Midnight Gang, you’ll meet the characters that have charmed and intrigued millions of young readers.
We are well underway with recording the audio and were delighted to have in studio the bestselling author himself, David Walliams! It was brilliant having him read descriptions of his own characters, and his empathy and interest in their experiences absolutely shone through – we could tell he was enjoying it. You can listen to an audio snippet here:
We’ve also recorded with actor Hugh Bonneville, who introduces us to stinky Mr Stink, the character he played in the 2012 film adaptation. Borrow the book to find out how the film teams created Mr Stink’s especially stinky beard!
The tactile pictures are comb-bound and ready to go. It is invaluable to be able to bring these illustrations to life for our blind and partially sighted members, introducing them to the power of the stories and the distinctive style of the illustrators at the same time. Watching how the drawings take shape through the carved master artworks and then becoming the finished tactile pictures is magical. Who would guess that the texture of sacking is created by a fine mesh while small nail heads cluster to make pyjamas spotty?
We are so looking forward to sharing The Wonderful World of David Walliams with you; it’s jam-packed with adventure and familiar characters and will be available to borrow very soon!
