Style icons are brought to life in Fashion Now!

Borrow the book to explore and recreate the fashions made popular by style icons from the 1950s to the present. With 39 audio tracks to choose from, seven tactile images and a great selection of music, you’re sure to find plenty of inspiration.

The book starts in the 1950s with the birth of the teenager. It was during this decade that young people really started to rebel against their parents, adopting their own tastes in music, pastimes and fashion influenced by musicians and film stars of the time. The coolest style icons were people like Grace Kelly, Marlon Brando and James Dean. In their films they portrayed rebellious young men who refused to follow the rules. They wore jeans, white t-shirts and black leather motorbike jackets in stark contrast to the suit, shirt and tie that was the accepted standard of dress.

Fashion Now! also talks about the mavericks who created their own style that others rushed to copy. The greatest example of a trendsetter who evolved his image over time is David Bowie. He created different stage personalities with distinctive clothes, hair and make-up and even went as far as giving them names, from Major Tom to Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and The Thin White Duke.

Teddy boys, mods, hippies, glam rockers, disco queens, punks, goths, – they’re all here in Fashion NOW! The book takes you right up to the 1990s with style tips to recreate some of the most popular looks from that decade.

Here’s what Fadzie, teen library member, had to say:

“I was completely adsorbed and it made me feel like I was actually there, which in my opinion is what all good books should be able to do. I also liked that the book gives you advice on how to create the different styles using the clothes you would usually buy.”
