Growing up with Living Paintings – Freddy’s story

15th November 2017

Freddy joined the Living Paintings library when he was 5 years old. He was born with very limited eyesight and has an eye condition called Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis (LCA) which affects his retinas.

Freddy’s mum shares how Living Paintings Touch to See books have helped her son.

“When Freddy first joined the library he used to borrow the children’s picture books including The Gruffalo, Elmer, Ten in the Bed and Floss, which include special tactile pictures and braille. These accessible books enabled him to learn to read braille.

As he got older he also started to borrow Living Paintings books at school. Freddy would choose subjects that would back up what he was learning at school, for example in Year 5 they were learning about Anglo Saxons, so he borrowed the educational resource on this subject. As he progressed with his braille he would read independently and use the audio guide to listen to the descriptions of the pictures.

Freddy is now at secondary school and uses Living Paintings resources as a home learning activity, to re-enforce his understanding of different subjects using his tactile skills, and to relax in his spare time. Freddy particularly likes the history and science books.”
